It was time.

Cora decided to go over to Rolf Johansson’s home and introduce herself. Perhaps even ask for a truce. Walking onto the property, she crossed the cluttered yard to the open back door that gave her a clear view inside through the screen. She could hear the faint white noise of a TV, but above that was something else. Something unfamiliar. Something wild.

The sound of birds.

Many of them.

Holding her breath, she approached the entrance quietly. Too curious to knock, she peered through the screen and saw tall cages lining the living room. Inside them were brilliantly colored birds, chattering in metallic tones and loud song. There were too many to count, and she couldn’t even see them all.

A cough from inside made her jump. It would be awful to be found spying.

She knocked and waited anxiously, not sure what to expect. She swallowed hard as she spotted the towering figure coming toward the door.

He stopped briefly at the sight of her and then approached the screen door, not opening it. He wore baggy pajama pants and a gray sweatshirt with food stains on the front. Cora stepped down from the stoop and stood back a couple feet. Staring down at her, he loomed larger than ever. What Rolf lacked in social skills, he made up for in intimidation.

She cleared her throat. “I never got to introduce myself.”

“I know who you are. The Matthews resemblance is undeniable.”

“Um, well, my name is Cora. I thought it would be nice if we got to know each other. What type of birds are those I hear?”

“You never mind those. They’re none of your business. I told you before that you’re not wanted here. I almost got back my family’s property before you came, but the guy wouldn’t sell.”

Guy? My grandfather? “Look, I’m sorry for past misunderstandings, but it has been settled. I was hoping we could put it behind us, start fresh, and be more neighborly to one another.” She offered a wobbly smile.

He opened the creaking screen door slowly and stared at her with an expression that made the hair on the back of her neck prickle.

“Over my dead body,” he said in a calm, cold voice.

Cora stood frozen with fear for a moment. Her mind told her to run, but her legs wouldn’t move.

“I ain’t giving up till I leave this property in a body bag. You remember that, missy.” His death stare sealed the promise. “Now, git off my property.”

Cora could only give a shaky nod before she hurried back to the road. She didn’t start to breathe normally until she was inside the lodge.

Kill him with kindness. What a joke! Rolf looked like he wanted to kill her. So much for burying the hatchet. The only thing her visit had done was guarantee more dead fish dumped on her doorstep. Winning over Rolf Johansson was impossible.
